Tips for taking a good selfie with glasses | 2020 Glasses

Love them or hate them, the selfie is here to stay, so let’s embrace it.

Did you know the word ‘Selfie’ has shimmied its way into the Oxford Dictionary? There is even a National Selfie Day (we’re not kidding!). And it is said that the average Millennial will take up to 25,700 selfies in their lifetime. Wow! That’s a lot of self-snapping. There is no denying it, we’re living in the digital age of self-portraits.

With glare, reflections and flash bounce to contend with, looking good on photos can be a tricky business as a glasses-wearer. But as ever, we are here to help! So put your camera in reverse and get ready to master the fine art of specsy selfie-taking with our top tips.

1. Learn to ‘Smize’

A term coined by supermodel Tyra Banks in 2009 on America’s Next Top Model, the ‘Smize’ is all about smiling with your eyes. See what she did there? A word merge milestone that has made the history books.  Smizing aside, eye contact is an essential element to a successful selfie. Whether they’re behind glass or not, your eyes are the windows to your soul, so let the world see those baby blues, beautiful browns or gorgeous greens.

2. Get snap happy!

Spot the perfect selfie and we guarantee that there is 231 imperfect selfies just like it, that have been swiftly moved to the deleted folder. So, don’t be fooled. Instagram versus Reality is a thing! Cast your mind back to maths class and your lesson probability, the more you take the better your chances are of scoring a winner! But one factor to be aware of that whilst the old adage ‘Practise makes perfect’ usually pays off, practising in the mirror, sounds like it would be helpful but it’s the inverse of what everyone else sees.

3. Make up is your friend

This may or may not apply to our male audience (we don’t judge!) but make up was invented to enhance your best features and disguise the ones you’re not so fond of. With your glasses automatically drawing attention to your eye area, lush up those lashes, bush up those brows and flick out those eyeliner wings. And SMIZE!

4. Don’t be a flasher!

Whilst make up is your friend, the flash is not. Avoid at all costs as it will bounce off your frame and lenses and create untold reflections. Seek out natural light where possible, even if it’s night-time.  Phone cameras and image enhancing apps are so advanced nowadays, that the flash isn’t needed, even in low-level light settings. Keep your eyes peeled for light sources around you too, such as street lights or even party lights if you’re out and about, and have fun with the effects that they can create.

5. Take advantage of the techie stuff

Science has given us some wonderful things and anti-reflective coatings for glasses are one of them. We would very much recommend including this option within your lens package, not just for selfies but they also reduce distracting reflections halo effects caused by artificial lighting or car headlights.

6. Work those angles

Reflections and shadows can make or break a #newglasses selfie. So work out where they are and employ the Golden Rule of Thirds. Switch your phone camera’s grid on and use those 9 primary sections to help structure your image like the professionals do. Place your peepers a third down from the top and face the camera straight on, to reduce glare and tilt head so that glasses are lower than the angle of the light.

7. Put those pouts away

We want to see your gnashers! Last but not least, a big wide toothy smile is far more attractive than a duck face and will balance out the width of your frames nicely.
